Royal Seal

This box was commissioned for the Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche (a Tibetan Tulku).

The box was constructed from American Walnut, and was made to house an antique Royal Seal. The lid is decorated with a 22-karat gold etching of the Mipham seal. This Walnut was unusually hard, probably cut from rootstock, which is harvested with gunstocks in mind. The best way to describe the wood figure (grain) is “fiddle-back”, the name given to this patterning because of its selection for violin backs.

The box measures 6”x 4.5”x 3”. The lid slides on a tongue and groove joint and closes on a bullet catch. The interior is upholstered with red brocade.
